The Delaware Valley Industrial Resource Center (DVIRC) announced today that Richard Bergs has joined the organization as a Health Hazard & Risk Assessment Analyst, bringing expertise in biomedical engineering, industrial automation, cybersecurity, and surgical robotics, along with experience supporting Department of War (DoW) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) programs.
Bergs has led complex efforts in technology readiness and risk analysis, medical needs definition, and testing of casualty care devices for the Defense Health Agency (DHA), including tourniquet-related technologies. He holds a Secret security clearance and contributes to international standards through NATO and ASTM working groups.

Prior to DVIRC, Bergs spent more than a decade as a Research Engineer V at the University of Texas at Arlington’s TMAC, specializing in industrial automation and manufacturing cybersecurity. He helped manufacturers strengthen NIST 800-171 compliance through hands-on workshops and training, and collaborated with Ethicon Endo-Surgery and UT Southwestern surgeons on advanced laparoscopic systems, contributing to nine issued patents.
Earlier, he worked at the Automation & Robotics Research Institute (ARRI) developing novel laparoscopic and trans-gastric surgical tools. His mechanical design work with Hanson Robotics was featured on the cover of Wired magazine.
Bergs holds an M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from UT Southwestern/UT Arlington and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from UT Arlington, with interests in robotics, telerobotics, haptics, and advanced computing.
