Tell us a little about your background and interest in Lean and Continuous Improvement.

I am originally from Philadelphia and have lived in this city my whole life. I received my bachelor’s degree in business from Drexel University, majoring in dual concentrations in Operations/Supply Chain Management and Economics.

Professionally, I have over 10 years of manufacturing experience working in the Delaware Valley region, having worked in the medical device, data and information, and food and beverage industries. I have worked in all facets of manufacturing from product development, quality control, production, warehousing, maintenance, and most recently as a Continuous Improvement manager.

My Lean and Continuous Improvement (CI) journey began early on in my career when I received training on Lean and Six Sigma methodologies. These trainings immediately drew my interest and motivated me to put these learnings to use. Throughout the years since my initial training, I had the privilege to work on countless Lean and CI projects that achieved meaningful results and impacted organizational objectives, primarily at Pepsi Beverages Company and Chelten House Products. Some of these projects included building processes, process mapping, downtime reduction, changeover efficiency, waste identification and reduction, 5S implementation, and optimizing raw material usage to name a few. It has been a wonderful experience applying Lean and CI philosophies in the organizations I have been in.

However, my biggest fulfillment from these projects was witnessing the growth and success of those around me and having a part in building and developing teams. To see people who I’ve coached and mentored complete projects, be promoted, or positively impact an organization has been much more rewarding to me. Additionally, I especially found it gratifying to have been able to spread the knowledge of Lean and CI to Hispanic populations. Having had the opportunity to be able to share this knowledge in a bi-lingual facility allowed me to realize the importance of inclusion as a contributor to success. Often times, Hispanic populations are not utilized to their full potential because of language barriers and lack of availability of training resources. Being that I myself am a first generation American, I value the importance of training and inclusion and therefore make it a personal mission to help bridge these gaps.

What excites you about CI?

CI is a mentality and culture of perpetually finding new and better ways to do things. It facilitates an environment for people to constantly challenge norms, question common practices, conduct experiments, build new processes, and ultimately learn. There is no cookie cutter CI program to follow so every organization will have its own opportunity to implement CI as they see fit and mold a program that makes sense to them. As a result, I am always excited to learn about companies’ experiences, both successes and failures. I like to learn about what worked well, what didn’t work so well, different tools out there, and how different companies implement CI in their locations. Learning from different organizations in turn provides unique perspectives and at times solutions to common problems.

Why is CI so important and valuable to manufacturers?

CI is extremely necessary to manufacturers for many reasons. CI first and foremost provides a structure to constantly improve on internal processes. Improving internal processes then usually results in benefits across the organization i.e., improved quality, reduced cost, reduced lead times etc.… As these benefits are achieved, companies start seeing increased profits, higher customer satisfaction, and new competitive advantages in the market.

CI is also very important to manufacturers because quite simply, it is a company culture that involves everyone working together to drive incremental change. CI is not to be completed by one person or department trying to resolve all the companies’ problems. CI instead calls for everyone in the organization to work together and collaborate. In doing so, new ideas are presented to address problems, communication flows better, and decisions are not made in silos. When everyone within the organization is working together and “rowing the same direction”, the organization becomes more effective at improving things. Additionally, we are programmed to be drawn to larger projects that have massive impacts, but CI focuses on driving long term change via small wins. The completion of smaller incremental projects culminates into large impacts in the end, as well as establishes a routine or cadence for people to get better at implementing Lean and CI through practice.

Why was DVIRC a career choice for you personally?

When looking back at the positions I’ve held in my career and thinking of what I value the most, the aspects I cherish above all are the ability to make an impact, learn from my work, and to help others grow along the way. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to join the DVIRC where I can do just that. Additionally, I can enjoy these characteristics not just within four walls of a single company, but across many organizations and industries across the region. Given that I am from Philadelphia, I take pride in knowing that I am working to serve the community I live in and its surrounding areas.

What advice would you offer manufacturing leaders regarding CI?

CI must be incorporated in every organization, regardless of company size. Unfortunately, many organizations believe that implementing CI requires a lot of time and investment. In turn, these same organizations never progress and tend to find themselves in a state of constantly “putting out fires”. That is why it is of utmost importance that leaders support CI and drive its implementation through the organization. CI cannot be implemented bottom up. If the leadership engagement and support structure is not in place, then CI will not flourish. It is the leadership team that must facilitate these practices, enable training, and empower their workforce to drive positive changes.

Tell us a little about your background and interest in Lean and Continuous Improvement.
