The barriers faced by entrepreneurs and small and mid-sized manufacturers (SMMs) often face the same barriers:[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1600370881337{background-color: #f8f9fa !important;}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are missed understanding of capabilities and demand:\n<ul>\n<li>Entrepreneurs aren\u2019t aware of the manufacturing capabilities are in the region<\/li>\n<li>Manufacturers aren\u2019t aware of the demand for production in the region<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Entrepreneurs often lack capital to make a leap in business development:\n<ul>\n<li>For entrepreneurs in the form of costs associated with scaling<\/li>\n<li>For SMMs in the form of costs associated with technology investments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Information is siloed, making it difficult for SMMs to see new market opportunities and for product developers to learn about cost saving strategies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Bringing two parts of the manufacturing ecosystem together can leverage resources, information, and insights, and deliver new educational programs and new product development services, which can remove barriers and stimulate new investments and growth. Since 2019, DVIRC and partners have been piloting new programs and services to help bridge these gaps.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Connecting Entrepreneurs<\/h2>\n<p>DVIRC has built a network of manufacturers over our 30-year history. This has generated a deep knowledge of what capabilities exist in the region. DVIRC is now exploring ways to share these insights with the entrepreneurial community. As a follow-up to the Manufacturing 101 events, DVIRC has started offering recommendations and referrals to entrepreneurs based on their individual manufacturing requirements. Product developers are interviewed and a manufacturing request is generated, which can include manufacturing requirements and supply chain development services. Those requests are then compared to the capabilities in the region, recommendations generated, and shared with the entrepreneurs. This match-making process is saving entrepreneurs hours of research and providing SMMs with potential new customers with no effort on their part.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Manufacturing 101<\/h2>\n<p>DVIRC and partners have been engaging with entrepreneurs in the Philadelphia region through \u201cManufacturing 101\u201d presentations hosted by local incubators, accelerators, and entrepreneurial hubs. Through the DOD OEA project\u2014known as the\u00a0<em>Manufacturing USA Access Project<\/em>, or\u00a0<em>MAP<\/em>\u2014 DVIRC is helping SMMs learn about and invest in Industry 4.0, (also known as Advanced Manufacturing Technologies, or AMTs), to improve their operations, and their workforce.<\/p>\n<p>DVIRC has convened a diverse group of leaders to determine how best to support regional small and mid-sized manufacturers (SMMs) and catalyze a \u201cmanufacturing renaissance\u201d based in the Delaware Valley.<\/p>\n<p>Although the Advisory Council was formed to support the education and integration of new technologies \u2013 robotics, automation, digital analytics, cybersecurity, etc., \u2013 the members determined the most pressing issue to address are the current and future workforce challenges.
